If you want to useĀ Paint.NET on linux you can try a port called paint-mono.

You could compile it from source, but there are precompiled packages for Ubuntu/Debian. Download it form here; you’ll also need this package.
It’s definitely not as feature rich as the gimp, but it looks nice and it’s easy to use.

The first alpha version of RawTherapee 3.0 is available for download and the license was changed to GPL. I’ve tried it on Ubuntu linux and it’s quite stable for an alpha version. and the new user interface gives you more room for your pictures. If you want a good photo workflow software, you could try RawTherapee; just download v2.4 if you need it for daily use.
